Podcast: My Bloody Valentine @ the Institute for Contemporary Arts in London (6.13.08)

Remember the first time you heard My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless, or the metal machine music of “You Made Me Realise”’s tortured, gorgeous aural holocaust? Consider yourself the lucky—if you were an audience member at My Bloody Valentine’s Friday the 13th “tour warmup” show in London, your hearing is most likely just that: only a memory, as Kevin Shields and Co. detonated an ear-crushing nebula of alternately sinuous and nerve-twisted shoegaze noise, constructing a beautiful, blistering weave of lustrous pop songs wrapped in the overwhelming white-noise ellipses of MBV’s Wall of Squall sound.

Opening with the grinding wail of Shield’s feedback intro, within a minute the layers of noise seam together to form the blissed implosion of “Only Shadow,” the beginning of a performance which lasts for 90 minutes—an hour and a half that surveys classic MBV songs as well as rare EP tracks (view the setlist after the jump), coalescing in the stungunned, free-flow kinetics of “You Made Me Realise.” Listener, prepare thyself—My Bloody Valentine is about to perform in your home.

Editor’s Note: Might want to start with the volume on low and bring it up to a proper level—I’ve already gone through one set of PC speakers playing this. Which, by the way, is awesome.
