Podcast: The Airborne Toxic Event w/ Radars to the Sky and the Morning Benders live @ the El Rey (8.07.08)

“Yet another joyous, cathartic and noise-blistered flashpoint in a narrative already riddled with them, the Airborne Toxic Event’s sold-out headlining set at the El Rey did indeed feel like part of a larger story—part of the band’s appeal to fans, beyond inserting subversively literate lyrics into accessible postpunk and new wave, is in the sense of mythology that the group generates. Not in any numb-node, rust-crusted classic rock sense of keening, pretentious or self-important melodrama and Zoso’d mystery, but simply in the fact that Airborne’s live performances act almost as chapters in an overarching arc, one that concerns the giddy liberation from fear and loss via dance-rippled rock ‘n roll.”

That’s how we described the Airborne Toxic Event’s set at the El Rey earlier this month, but it serves as a fitting summation of the entire evening–heartfelt and personal songs blown wide open across a screaming audience via three bands and their staggering music. Radars to the Sky, The Morning Benders, and Airborne each turned in sets that could have stood as headliners; the fact that one show housed such alternately explosive and fragile music is a wonder, and, by the evening’s end, the audience was simply stunned.
