Podcast: Invasion of the Squaregirls II – Square Harder

Last week, Marion Hodges of the Squaregirls provided a stellar, ridiculously catchy DJ set for our weekly podcast, offering a crunchy blast of songs spinning from artists as disparate as Orange Juice, the Troggs, Buddy Holly, and My Bloody Valentine–the kind of eclectic wash of rock sounds you’d likely hear throbbing in between sets at a local, Squaregirl-spun show.

For this week’s podcast, Kristen Grant offers a different take on the Squaregirls spectrum–this is a mix of local bands who’ve played at the SG’s showcases, from Le Switch to Pizza! to the Henry Clay People to Aushua. And it rocks. Rocks.

As I wrote last week: “the Squaregirls are two of the best DJs in Los Angeles. The shows at which they spin are kaleidoscopic journeys into diverse popscapes of hyper-danceable earphoria, with their sets just as much a headbobbing, smile-inducing pleasure as the bands they buffer…listener, prepare thyself—you’re about to have the Squaregirls spin in your own home.”

There’s something pretty remarkable going on in the LA music scene these days. Walk into nearly any LA club on the east side and one of these is bound to happen; Nick and Rob and Aaron and Joe and Matt will greet you with a smile and hug, Mouse will challenge you to a game of Galaga, Joey will give you crap about beating your ass at Scrabulous, Katya will wow you with her guacamole dip and Mike will buy you a beer – or six. Being a part of squaregirls has given us a glimpse into a unique group of musicians, bloggers, promoters and fans united by the love of music. Unique in taste, exceptional in talent and extraordinary in being, all are friends and support one another.

We are grateful for the bands that have (and will be playing!) our showcases. But even more grateful that they have become our friends. We can only hope everyone will love and support them as much as we do!
