Residency Diary: Happy Hollows, Part Two

Residency Diaries are exactly what they sound like: the thoughts, musings, and scribbles of rock bands as they host a series of month-long shows in various Los Angeles venues. This month’s R.D. entries will be from the Happy Hollows, a band whose wild-eyed artpop bloodlust can be heard every Monday night in November for free at Spaceland (presented by Aquarium Drunkard and Buzzbands.LA).

Our second residency night at Spaceland was even more fun than the first. We arrived at Spaceland at 6 and had plenty of time to sound check and eat delicious Leela Thai and put up our cloud backdrop! We have even more decorations for tonight’s show.
Overall, it was a lovely and relaxed show. I had an inspired idea during sound check to have our audience design posters for our residency, since we keep forgetting to print our posters and put them up. Chris ran out and got some crayons and paper, and it was so great that the audience totally got into making posters! People were coloring and creating at the table in the back. I was so overjoyed out to see it. There was a moment late at night when a group of about six people were all coloring posters and everyone was singing a little song and we were in that “zone” that we used to get into in elementary school, where everyone would be focused and quietly happy together, do you know what I’m talking about? It was so adorable! :) It made me incredibly happy.
By the way, the winner of the poster drawing contest will win a free guitar from Daisyrock. People have two more weeks to draw their posters!
What made me even happier were the bands that played. First up, we had The Widow Babies. This band is simply incredible!!! They blow my mind every time. I didn’t know it, but this was their last show. I was heartbroken because they are brilliant. Most of them are going off to college in other states. They are such sweeties and I know we will all see great things musically from all of them.
Then Casxio played, who were incredible musicians, whoa! That lead guy has such an incredible voice. It is really amazing that he plays these very intricate basslines while also singing so magnificently. We were all marveling at their musicianship. They really got the audience going and they were so much of fun!
Then we played and it felt joyous. This show we had Andrew Jeffords, my guitar hero, join us. Having him on stage with us was a real treat. He runs the local label Papermade. He has tapes of bands on Papermade and merch for sale next to our merch every week. Everyone should check out the great bands on Papermade! We have a Papermade band on the bill almost every night on our residency.
Then The Soft Hands played, and OMG, they just blew me away! They are so incredible! Their new drummer is incredible, and their songs are simply the best. It was so great to see so many people sticking around to see them. They will be huge, I know it.
Tonight we have another group of incredible bands on the bill! First up is Random Patterns! Then The Drums! And finally Evan Way of the Parson Red Heads!
So come on by and sing and dance and color!!!!!!!
Love,
Sarah
