Podcast: Bob Dylan live @ the Hollywood Palladium (10.13.09)

“Bob Dylan and his crack backing band took to the stage for the second of their three-night stint at the Hollywood Palladium last Wednesday night, bringing with them a  startlingly tight and energetic fusion of jump-blues, rockabilly and pre-rock balladry meshed with some of the most poetic and landmark songs in pop history.  Amidst the stinging, staggering guitar leads by Charlie Sexton, Dylan croaked, crooned and bellowed throughout the nearly two-hour set as if he was having the time of his life–a Chesire’d smile frequently shined through the shadow cast by his black cowboy hat as he frequently shuffled and danced from his stage-right keyboard to center-stage to wail upon his harmonica, or as he winked and emoted through a series of wry, wistful late-period love songs.”

That’s how we described the second evening of Bob Dylan’s three-night stint at the Hollywood Palladium last week, and, for those who weren’t lucky enough to catch one of the sets, we’re offering up a pristine recording of the first night (we chose the first night over the remaining two shows due to its longer length and more wide-ranging setlist).  From the hard-edged grooves of opener “Gonna Change My Way of Thinking” to the woozy “Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again” to a screaming, freight train take on “Like  a Rolling Stone,” it’s a show well worth listening to.  Podcast and setlist after the jump.
