Podcast: Pavement’s Last Concert (Live in London – 11.20.99)

Well, after a decade whispers, rumors, false hopes, it looks like Pavement is reuniting in 2010 for, according to the band’s site, “dates around the world,” while still noting that this is not a “prelude to additional jaunts and/or a permanent reunion” (you can pre0rder tickets to their announced New York show on 9/21/10 here tomorrow morning).  Either way–PAVEMENT IS REUNITING! And while the cynic in me finds it a little disheartening that Pavement, a band that so drolly and cleverly mocked typical rock band conventions, is now engaging in said typical rock band conventions for a reunion world tour, the fan boy in me is just happy to know that I’ll finally get to hear songs like “Summer Babe,” “Range Life,” “Unfair” and “Shady Lane” live.

But, until the tour begins, I’m content to make due with shows like this one–Pavement’s final concert before breaking up a decade ago.  Recorded at Brixton Academy in London, it’s the sound of a band coming apart–frontman Stephen Malkmus attached a set of handcuffs to his mic stand, saying “these symbolize what it’s like being in a band all these years” before being even more specific–”this is our last show…thanks for coming all these years.”  And while today’s news would make that last statement apparently untrue, it makes the show no less dramatic or excellent, as one of the ’90s greatest bands played their set as if it were for the very last time.  It’s excellent–podcast and setlist after the jump.  And I’ll see you at the Pavement shows in ‘10.
