Billy Corgan to lead Sky Saxon tribute band at the Echoplex on July 24th

In case you missed it in the wake of the media frenzy generated by Michael Jackson’s death, Sky Saxon, frontman of the seminal L.A. garage rock band The Seeds, died on June 25th due to heart failure, according to his wife. And, in honor of the fallen artist, Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan will be heading up a one-off tribute band, Spirit in the Sky, to pay homage at Honoring the Legacy of Sky Sunlight Saxon of The Seeds: Sunlight Arelich Aquarian at the Echoplex on July 24th. Saxon had previously collaborated with Corgan, and was featured in the Pumpkins video “Superchrist.”
Also in Spirit in the Sky will be Electric Prunes bassist Mark Tulin, another Corgan collaborator (other members TBA). Tulin also once played bass in the L.A. psych-rock band the Strawberry Alarm Clock, a band which–in an interwoven lineup fit for a P.T. Anderson film–will also be on-hand to play a set for the evening. Also present will be the remaining members of the Seeds, according to the Seeds’ official website. While there is no cover charge, donations will be accepted.
You can listen to a Corgon/ Saxon unreleased collaboration, “Choose to Choose Love,” here on a Saxon tribute page (via Facebook–requires login).
