New Tunes/ Free Download: The Airborne Toxic Event – “Goodbye Horses” (Q Lazzarus cover)
After catching the Airborne Toxic Event concert last week at the Fonda, it was interesting to note that the strongest songs in their set were not the standard crowd-pleasers like “Sometime Around Midnight” or “Does This Mean You’re Moving On?”; rather, it was (for me, anyway) the four unreleased tracks the band performed that coalesced into the highlights of their show: “The Girls in Their Summer Dresses” (available for free download here), “This Losing” (technically available, as long as you buy the U.K. version of their debut), “Echo Park” (listen/ watch it here), and Airborne’s surprising cover of Q Lazzarus’ “Goodbye Horses.”
Speaking to the band after the show, I learned that the song cropped up in soundchecks and rehearsals as a joke, but slowly grew from an ironic cover jam into the epic version that made it’s appearence at the Fonda last Thursday. And while last week’s slowburn, ferocious take on the song still doesn’t quite wash away the memory of a naked Buffalo Bill dancing to the song in The Silence of the Lambs, it’s infused with enough charm and (this being the Airborne Toxic Event) drama to move away from the original’s oddball cheesiness yet remain highly, highly listenable–seriously, it’s been stuck in my head for a week now.
Editor’s Note: Turns out that The Hectors laid down their own powerhouse version of “Horses” back in the fall of 2007, as evidenced by the lovely shoegazed crush heard here. There is now no chance of getting the song out of my head.

Just caught TATE at the ACL festival in Austin on Saturday Oct 3. I was at another show when I heard “Goodbye Horses” floating over and I ran like a crazy person to see where this–one of my favorite songs EVER–could possibly be coming from.
And that’s how I discovered this amazing band. Thanks for letting me hear it again here, MADE my day.
