Podcast: An Indie 103.1 Tribute – The Final Beatles Concert (1.30.69)

Well, it’s over—as reported exhaustively on most local blogs yesterday (with Kevin Bronson’s BuzzBands admirably and extensively leading the way), Indie 103.1 is no longer a terrestrial radio station. The official line is that the station had to either become an online-only entity to retain its unique personality, or become a highly corporatized mainstream rock radio station in an effort to increase its fledgling ratings. Whatever the case, having become—at least for the time being—a non-DJ’d, playlist-streaming station online also seems to have robbed Indie of said personality (Classical Geek Theatre has a nice piece on the issue); in the end, an era has definitely ended.
It should be noted, though, that for an eclectic station such as Indie to last even one year (let alone five) in such a saturated radio market as the one in L.A. is nothing short of a miracle—seriously, the playlists generated by Mr. Shovel, Steve Jones and Henry Rollins alone, however wonderful, probably sent most of the bean-counters screaming for the Hollywood hills. The end of Indie’s radio presence, while disheartening, shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, no matter how important the station was/is to our ears and the development and success of many local artists.

So, as the dust settles and the more and more details emerge, and Indie 103.1 blasts its last few songs on the FM, we’ve decided to post a last hurrah of a podcast in the station’s honor—the final concert by some Brit pop band, The Beatles, recorded on a rooftop 40 years ago in January of 1969. It’s a gargantuan, 22-song farewell, and is appropriately rocking and reverent (and sounds amazing, natch). Indie’s absence is already palpable, and will be sorely missed, especially here at Web in Front.

I think that we have all heard so much of The Beatles that we begin to take them for granted. This set really shows off and should remind us of the fantastic musicianship of all these guys. (Yes you too Ringo)! Awesome post – Thank You!
