After 21 long months of campaigning, mudslinging, “you betcha”s, William Ayers, plumbers, “that one”s, and two fundamentally different perspectives on how to wrench the remnants of a nearly collapsed economic and political system out of an eight-year quagmire of almost clichéd Orwellian proportions, the presidential election is now upon us. All the best things by and about the candidates have been said, and the only person left worth being heard from is here, on Web in Front: Bruce Fucking Springsteen.

That’s right, the Boss. Today’s podcast comes from 1984 in which Springteen plays a Herculean two-hour set at the inauguration of the Born in the USA tour; stripped of that album’s overproduction, the songs are powerful and raw anthems of disgruntled rage and disenfranchisement, cataloging the failings of both a country and the people who failed to uphold its lofty visions while maintaining a sense of hope (often behind the wheel of a free and speeding car on the highway) that things could still be made right if we try.

So, on this very important day—possibly a crucial pivot point in our history and future—go participate as a citizen and vote; then come home and participate as a listener, and immerse yourself in the wild and not-so-innocent shuffle of Bruce Springsteen, a musician who is incapable, no matter how bleak the encroaching dark, of ignoring the chance of finding light at the end of a shadowy tunnel.
