Podcast: The Black Keys @ Spaceland (04.08.03)

Though the reaction to their 2008 release, Attack & Release, seems to be a bit mixed—for the record, we think it’s really good, but not quite great—there was a time when the Black Keys would release albums to an immediately prone, desirous and adulatory swath of record reviews and indie rock fans. Such were the halcyon days of 2002-04, which saw the release of the Keys’ three greatest records: The Big Come Up (2002) , Thickfreakness (2003), and Rubber Factory (2004), a time when they could do no wrong and before they had traded in their sweatily noise-crazed blooze for art-dazed mood.

Taken from the release date party at Spaceland for Thickfreakness, today’s podcast finds the Black Keys deep within both their element and their hotstreak, in which the swamp-stained blues assault of their thrilling originals was more than enough to stand up next to cover songs by artists as prestigious (and important to the Keys’ sound) as Junior Kimbrough (please check him out) and the Stooges. Whew. It’s good stuff.
