Podcast: The Replacements live @ Al’s Bar in Los Angeles, CA (11.04.84)

Throughout 2008, the catalog of The Replacements (both the Twin/Tone years and the Sire/Warner Bros era) has been re-released, repackaged and remastered, giving an added depth and quality to already classic albums, like Let it Be (our favorite) and Tim (update: in a weird alignment of the blog stars, Aquarium Drunkard has a nice piece on the Sire/Warner re-releases today, go check it out). That said, one thing the remastered discs can’t do is erase some the highly dated ’80s slick-shlocked production, a sound that would have completely marred the LPs had Paul Westerberg’s songwriting and the Replacements’ sheer Faces-in-a-frenzy energy not pushed them to such ridiculously catchy, insistent and, yes, even moving–”Answering Machine,” c’mon!–heights.

As such, it’s always nice to revisit the Replacements without thick gobs of knobtwisted studio vaseline chunked across such gems as “I Will Dare” or the aforementioned “Answering Machine’–which is why the ‘ments live will always be a gift to the ears, as they most especially were in November of 1984, touring behind Let it Be in L.A. Enjoy.

Some computers with outdated or older security programs have been causing problems with the podcasts. Instead of pressing the ‘play’ button, click the ‘audio mp3′ button directly beneath it. Should work for you then.
