Podcast: Invisible Republic, Part Three: My Morning Jacket live @ The Fillmore Miami Beach (8.29.08)

In his book Invisible Republic: Bob Dylan’s The Basement Tapes (originally The Old, Weird America), Greil Marcus asserts The Basement Tapes‘ importance by positing that it not only revives the vibrant, indigenous American music found in the priceless Anthology of American Folk Music, but that it honorably carries on that vision of rollicking and alive Americana that was born over a century ago.

And, in their own unique ways, the bands featured in our three-part podcast today work to revive and build upon the genre that very nearly leapt from Dylan’s forehead the moment he sat down with The Band in Big Pink in 1967 to record the Tapes, and in doing so they keep the strange and haunting bloodlines of whatever you want to call it (country rock, alt-country, Americana, indie-folk, etc) alive for another generation. My Morning Jacket, in addition to being one of the most neuron-fusingly powerful modern live acts around, are also one of modern music’s most exciting prisms of pop music, fracturing a myriad of genres into one eye-(and ear-)dazzled burst of sound that is at once unique and familiar as they blur the lines between country and Americana and rock ‘n roll and indie (and they even make jam-music not soul-pealingly awful).
You know those really, really arrogant music snobs who always try to make you feel bad by claiming that if “You haven’t seen (insert band here), you haven’t lived”? Well, as much as we hate them, too, if they say My Morning Jacket, they’re so right. Set list after the jump.
